The 4 Day tour in the Democratic Republic of Congo to see the Low land and Mountain Gorillas, starts in Cyangugu and ends in Gisenyi at The border of Rwanda and Congo. The tour takes you in Eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, another home to the endangered Gorillas in Africa. DR Congo has both Lowland and Mountain Gorillas. Lowland Gorillas are found in Kahuzi Biega national park and the critically endangered mountain gorillas are found in famous Virunga National Park.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Bukavu in Congo

Meet you in Cyangugu at the Rwanda Congo border, and Transfer you in Bukavu. Bukavu is a city in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), lying at the extreme south-eastern extent of Lake Kivu, west of Cyangugu in Rwanda, and separated from it by the outlet of the Ruzizi River. It is the capital of the South Kivu province. Kahuzi-Biéga National Park, a World Heritage Site and one of two homes of the Eastern Lowland Gorilla, is close to the city and can be accessed from the road to Kavumu. The park headquarters at Tshivanga is located 31 km from Bukavu.

Day 2: Low land Gorilla tracking in Kahuzi Biega

After early Breakfast – transfer by our tourist vehicle to the National Park station for Briefing. Meet with the rangers, and assign a gorilla group/family you shall track. After a briefing, transfer to the start of the trek and head into the jungles. It is a strenuous trek but very ambient, with lots of wildlife sightings and wonderful scenery. You will hike for 2 to 3 hours in the jungle area, to find the large lowland gorilla family. The species in kahuzi Biega National park are Eastern Lowland Gorilla, very different from the more famous Mountain Gorillas found in the Virunga National Park. Unlike the chimpanzee-like lowland gorillas found in Gabon and Congo Brazzaville, The Kahuzi Biega gorillas are large, about the size of the mountain gorilla, so you definitely won’t be disappointed. After 1 Hour with Gorillas, Return to meet your driver at the starting point and transfer to your accommodation to relax, diner, and overnight.

Day 3: Transfer to Goma by Boat via lake kivu

Early Morning after break fast at your hotel transfer you at the port where a boat is waiting for you. After presenting your ticket, Board a motor launch in Bukavu across Lake Kivu to Goma. This cruise will pass by many islands and provide great views of misty rainforest, terraced plantations, and steep cliffs that border Africa’s highest elevation lake. Enjoy time at leisure to explore at your own pace, or relax at your hotel.

Day 4: Mountain Gorillas Tracking in Virunga National park

Very early in the morning, you will depart from Goma and Drive up to the Virunga national park station where you will be briefed about the dos and don’ts while you are with the Gorillas. After the briefing, you proceed for the memorable adventure of gorilla tracking. This rather strenuous but unforgettable adventure will take you through thick and muddy environment, and may take you 2-4 hours to locate the amazing apes, depending on their movements. After a maximum period of one hour with the Gorillas, you descend to the headquarters where the driver will transfer you to Goma for Dinner and overnight.

What to Bring:

You must bring appropriate walking or hiking shoes as trainers are not suitable for the forest terrain. Waterproof clothing, preferably dark in colour as bright colours will attract insects, is necessary since the forest is at high altitude so there is a good chance of rain. Remember to bring high-factor sunscreen and a hat too, most of all don’t forget your yellow fever vaccination card.
